Course Overview
The RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights course gives you the skills and knowledge to work safely at heights in industries like construction, mining, maintenance, telecommunications, and other high-risk environments.
This nationally recognised unit is part of the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. You’ll learn how to follow safe work procedures, choose and use the right height safety equipment, control risks, and meet your legal responsibilities when working at heights.
The course also covers important safety laws and standards, including:
🔹Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and state/territory equivalents
🔹Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 – Part 4.4 Falls (including Regulation 78 – Managing the risk of a fall)
🔹Managing the Risk of Falls at Workplaces – Code of Practice (Safe Work Australia)
🔹 Australian Standards for fall-arrest systems and anchor devices (AS/NZS 1891 series, AS/NZS 4488.2, AS/NZS 5532)

This course is suitable for individuals who:
✔️ Work or intend to work in industries where working at heights is required.
✔️ Are required to understand risk management practices associated with working at heights.
✔️ Need to refresh their existing qualification in accordance with industry standards and regulations.
✔️ Site-based personnel working under a Safety Management System (SMS), Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), or High Risk Work protocols
✔️ Entry-level workers, tradespeople, and plant operators who are required to identify height-related hazards, apply risk controls, and use fall protection equipment as part of their role

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements
🔹 Minimum Age: Participants must be atleast 16 years of age.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID (e.g. Driver Licence)
🔹 USI Requirement: Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes.
🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔸 Ability to ascend and descend ladders, work on scaffolds or elevated platforms, and wear a harness for extended periods
🔸 Capability to interpret height safety signage, hazard controls, equipment instructions, and SWMS
🔸 Ability to communicate using standard height safety terminology, hand signals, and safety briefings
🔸 Basic digital literacy to access learning materials and complete online assessments (for blended or online delivery)
📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs. Foundation Skills for this course align with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) at: Reading (2–3), Writing (2), Oral Communication (2–3), Numeracy (2), and Digital Literacy (1–2).
Course Duration
A typical heights course is delivered in 1 day.
The total Volume of Learning for this course is 20–25 hours, combining supervised and unsupervised activities. Duration may vary depending on learner pathway and prior experience.
🔹 Face-to-face or virtual theory: 8–10 hours (supervised)
🔹 Online/pre-course reading: 3–4 hours (unsupervised)
🔹 Independent study: 2–3 hours (unsupervised)
🔹 Structured practical exercises: 6–8 hours (supervised)
🔹 Assessment activities: 4–6 hours (supervised)
Course Delivery Methods
📖 Face-to-Face Training: Conducted at our training centre or on-site at your workplace.
📖 Blended Delivery: Theory components can be completed online; however, all practical assessments must be conducted in person at an approved training facility or workplace to meet competency requirements.
📖 Workplace Training: Customised on-site delivery to meet specific organisational requirements.
📖 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Available for those with relevant skills and experience.
📝 Pre-Learning Pathway: Learners who complete pre-course theory in advance attend a shorter practical-focused session, allowing more time for hands-on application.
📝 No Pre-Learning Pathway: Learners without prior theory complete an extended face-to-face session with integrated theory and practical training.
📝 Online Challenge Test: For blended delivery, online theory learners must pass a Challenge Test (6 random questions, 100% pass) before practical assessment. Learners who do not meet this requirement will be rescheduled with additional support. The Challenge Test applies only to learners completing the theory component online before attending a practical session. 100% pass is required before progressing to practical assessment.
Assessment Methods
Assessment includes:
📖 Theory Assessment: Multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
📖 Practical Demonstration: Hands-on application of working at heights procedures.
📖 Workplace-based Assessment: Where applicable, assessments can be conducted on-site.
📄 Risk Control Documentation: Completion of a Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS), or similar document to demonstrate site-specific hazard identification and control measures.
📝 Third-Party Report (if applicable): For currently employed learners, a qualified supervisor may verify competency in applying height safety procedures on the job.
All assessment tasks are mapped to the unit’s elements, performance criteria, foundation skills, performance evidence, and knowledge evidence.
Certificate & Outcome
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights, issued by Corrsafe RTO 40621. This qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Industry best practices recommend refresher training every two years, as per the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (QLD) and the Managing the Risk of Falls at Workplaces Code of Practice 2021.

Funding

This course is eligible for Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funding under the 2025–2026 Short Course Program. CSQ provides financial support to help upskill Queensland’s building and civil construction workforce.
CSQ Subsidy available: $250.00
Student Contribution: $100.00
(includes $50.00 CSQ-mandated co-contribution fee + $50.00 non-funded administration fee)
Applicants must receive written confirmation of CSQ funding approval before commencing training, as retrospective claims are not permitted. Funding is subject to eligibility and availability.

🎓 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you already have experience working safely at heights, you may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This process assesses your existing knowledge and skills against the requirements of RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights.
To be considered for RPL, you’ll need to provide sufficient, valid, and current evidence, which may include:
📁 A portfolio of relevant work experience (e.g., roles where you regularly worked at heights or used fall protection systems)
✅ Employer or supervisor third-party verification statements (we can provide a template)
🎓 Previous accredited Statements of Attainment or training transcripts (USI Transcript)
🛠️ A practical demonstration of your skills, such as correctly fitting and using height safety equipment, inspecting gear, and implementing safe work procedures
🗣️ Responses to oral questions or interviews with an assessor to confirm your knowledge of legislation, hazard control, and emergency procedures
⚠️ Important: While there is no formal licensing requirement for this unit, many worksites, principal contractors, and safety management systems require you to hold a current Statement of Attainment for working at heights.
If gaps are identified during the RPL process, we’ll arrange gap training and assessment to help you achieve full competency.
