Course Duration

The Confined Space course is typically delivered within 1 day.

The total volume of learning for this unit is approximately 30 hours, which includes:

🔹 10–14 hours supervised theory and practical instruction

🔹 3–5 hours pre-course reading or online learning (e.g., legislation, procedures)

🔹 2–3 hours independent study (e.g., reviewing confined space permit systems, signage, emergency procedures)

🔹 6–8 hours supervised assessment (written theory and practical demonstration in a confined space scenario)

This range allows flexibility for experienced workers (e.g., RPL or refresher) and new entrants requiring structured delivery, contextualised learning, and hands-on practice to achieve competency.

Course Delivery Methods

🏫 Face-to-Face – Theory and practical delivered at Corrsafe’s facility or your workplace. Pre-learning students attend a shorter practical-focused session; others complete full theory and practical on site.

💻 Blended – Online theory via Corrsafe LMS (4–8 hrs) followed by practical training and assessment at an approved location.

🏗️ Workplace – Customised on-site delivery tailored to your organisation’s needs.

🌐 Online + Practical – Complete online theory (4–8 hrs), then attend for practical skills training. Challenge Test (6 random questions from theory content, 100% pass mark) must be completed at the start of the practical session. Learners who do not pass will be rescheduled and provided additional support before reattempting.

🔄 Refresher – Online theory only (4–8 hrs). Evidence of recent, relevant confined space competency must be provided before enrolment (e.g., workplace documentation, permits, third-party verification, or photographs). This ensures refresher training is appropriate and meets industry standards.

📜 RPL – Provide evidence of prior learning or experience; gap training offered if needed.

Assessment Methods

Assessment for RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces is conducted in line with the Principles of Assessment (fairness, flexibility, validity, reliability) and the Rules of Evidence (validity, sufficiency, authenticity, currency).

Learners will complete:

🔹 Theory Assessment: Multiple-choice and short-answer questions assessing knowledge of confined space hazards, entry procedures, PPE, atmospheric testing, and emergency protocols.

🔹 Practical Demonstration: Hands-on application of confined space procedures in a simulated or workplace environment that meets the unit’s conditions. Tasks include interpreting and completing entry permits, conducting atmospheric testing, applying risk controls, using PPE and communication equipment, and performing safe entry/exit procedures.

🔹 Workplace-Based Assessment (if applicable): Where appropriate, evidence may be collected from the learner’s workplace using a third-party report verified by a competent supervisor or WHS officer.

All assessments are mapped to the unit of competency and designed to ensure that learners can demonstrate the required skills and knowledge to industry standards. Reasonable adjustments are available where required, provided they do not compromise assessment integrity or licensing outcomes.
