Course Overview

This course aligns with RIISS00034 – Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set from the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. Participants will develop the skills and knowledge required to work safely in surface coal mining operations in accordance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 (Qld), and Queensland’s Recognised Standard 11 – Training in Coal Mines. This program meets the requirements of Queensland’s Recognised Standard 11 (Surface Coal Mines) for both new entrants and refresher training. It is mandatory for anyone seeking to work in a Queensland surface coal mine, ensuring they hold the skills and knowledge required to operate safely, comply with site procedures, and respond effectively to workplace hazards and emergencies.

Participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency contained within RIISS00034 – Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set:

RIIERR205D – Apply initial response first aid

RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace

RIIERR302E – Respond to local emergencies and incidents

Who Should Enrol?

This course is suitable for individuals who:

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Minimum Age: Participants must be at least 16 years of age.

🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components. You must be physically capable of performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, as well as performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID (e.g. Driver Licence or passport)
🔹 USI RequirementParticipants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes.

📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.

 

Course Duration

📆 Full Course: Typically delivered over two consecutive days, including theory and practical components.
💻 Refresher Course: 100% online, self-paced, typically completed in 6–8 hours.
📆 RPL: Assessment time will vary based on evidence provided.

This course involves approximately 40–45 hours of combined learning, including supervised training and assessment, online or pre-course study, and independent review. Duration may vary depending on your experience and chosen delivery method.

Total Volume of Learning: 40–45 hours
🔹 Supervised training & assessment: 16–28 hours (face-to-face or online refresher)
🔹 Unsupervised study & pre-learning: 8–12 hours

Course Delivery Methods

This course is offered as Full or Refresher, with face-to-face or blended (online + practical) options as specified below.

🔹 Full Course – Face-to-Face: Trainer-led theory and practical over 2 days, or 1 day if pre-learning is completed.

🔹 Full Course – Blended (Online + Practical): Self-paced online theory, then a face-to-face practical session and assessment.

🔹 Refresher – 100% Online: Experienced workers complete all theory online (6–8 hours). Evidence of recent, relevant competency is verified prior to enrolment.

👉 Challenge Test (blended only): Learners who complete online theory must pass a short Challenge Test (6 random questions, 100% pass) at the start of the face-to-face practical to verify knowledge. If not met, learners are rescheduled with support.

Training and assessment align with Recognised Standard 11 and the assessment conditions of the six units.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted in accordance with industry, WHSQ, and ASQA standards and includes:

📖 Theory Assessment: Written questions (multiple-choice and short answer) covering each unit of competency in the Standard 11 Skill Set.
🛠 Practical Demonstration: Hands-on application of safe work procedures, hazard identification, incident response, and first aid in a simulated mining environment.
📋 Workplace-based Assessment: Available for participants completing the course on-site, provided the environment meets assessment requirements.

A qualified assessor will supervise and mark all assessment components. Participants must be deemed competent in both theory and practical tasks to receive their Statement of Attainment.

Certificate & Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units of competency within the RIISS00034 – Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set, issued by Corrsafe RTO 40621. This qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and satisfies the training requirements under Recognised Standard 11 for open-cut coal mines in Queensland.

Note: Industry best practice recommends refresher training every five years. Corrsafe allows a 12-month grace period after certificate expiry, subject to company discretion.

🎓 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you already have experience working in surface coal mining operations and have previously completed some or all of the skills covered in RIISS00034 – Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set, you may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
This process assesses your existing skills and knowledge against the requirements of the six units of competency within the skill set:

  • RIIRIS201E – Conduct local risk control

  • RIIERR205D – Apply initial response first aid

  • RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace

  • RIIERR302E – Respond to local emergencies and incidents

  • RIIGOV201E – Comply with site work processes/procedures

  • RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures

To be considered for RPL, you’ll need to provide sufficient, valid, and current evidence, which may include:

📁 A portfolio of relevant work experience in surface coal mining environments
✅ Employer or supervisor third-party verification statements (we can provide a template)
🎓 Previous accredited Statements of Attainment or USI transcript showing completion of equivalent units
🗣️ Responses to oral questions or interviews with an assessor to confirm competence

⚠️ Important: For Recognised Standard 11 compliance, all required units must be current and meet Queensland mining industry requirements. Where gaps are identified, we will offer gap training and assessment to support you to full competency.
