The RIIRIS402E – Carry out the Risk Management Process course is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage risks in the Resources and Infrastructure Industries. 

This course aligns with RIIRIS402E – Carry out the Risk Management Process from the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. Participants will develop the competencies required to systematically identify hazards, assess and control risks, and monitor risk management processes in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (QLD), relevant Codes of Practice, and industry best practices. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out risk management processes in the Resources and Infrastructure Industries, including identifying hazards, assessing and controlling risk, and reviewing effectiveness in accordance with established procedures.

This course is suitable for individuals who:

✔️ Need to refresh their existing qualification in accordance with industry standards and regulations.
✔️ Individuals responsible for implementing, facilitating, or auditing risk management processes to ensure compliance with WHS legislation, site policies, and industry standards.

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Minimum Age: Participants must be at least 18 years of age.
🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID (e.g. Driver Licence or Passport) 
🔹 USI Requirement: Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes.

📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.Foundation skills for this course align with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF): Reading Level 3, Writing Level 3, Oral Communication Level 2–3, Numeracy Level 2–3, and Digital Literacy Level 2. These skills are required to interpret risk registers, legislation, and procedures; complete hazard reports and risk assessments; consult with stakeholders; and use digital tools to research and submit documentation.

Course Duration

A typical G2 course is delivered within one day.

Total Volume of Learning: 40–50 hours, including:
🔹 12–16 hrs supervised theory and group work
🔹 8–10 hrs unsupervised pre-course reading or online study
🔹 6–8 hrs unsupervised independent study
🔹 8–10 hrs supervised scenario-based exercises
🔹 6–8 hrs supervised assessment

 

Course Delivery Methods

📖 Face-to-Face Training: Conducted at our training centre or on-site at your workplace. This option includes interactive discussions, practical activities, and assessments conducted in person.

📖 Online Training (Fully Self-Paced): This course can be completed 100% online with no requirement to attend a face-to-face session. Participants will access all learning materials via our online platform and complete assessments remotely. To meet training package requirements, all assessments are designed to ensure competency is demonstrated in a real or simulated workplace environment. Simulated assessments are conducted using scenarios aligned with real workplace environments, as per training package and ASQA requirements.
Assessments include:
✔️ Online theory assessments: Multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
✔️ Workplace-based risk management activities: Case studies, workplace documentation, or simulated workplace scenarios, ensuring compliance with training package requirements.

Refresher: Online theory only (4–8 hrs). Evidence of recent, relevant risk management competency is required prior to enrolment (e.g., workplace documentation, third-party verification, or current risk registers).

📖 Workplace Training: Organisations can request on-site training tailored to their specific workplace risks and industry needs. This method ensures assessments are conducted in a relevant workplace setting.

📖 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Experienced individuals may apply for RPL by providing documented workplace evidence to demonstrate competency.

Assessment Methods

All assessments are conducted following ASQA’s Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence, ensuring fairness, validity, reliability, and flexibility.

Assessment methods include:
📖 Knowledge Assessment: Multiple-choice and short-answer questions to demonstrate understanding of risk management concepts.
📖 Practical Assessment: Online participants will complete structured risk management activities, including case studies, scenario-based tasks, and workplace risk assessments. These assessments align with ASQA’s Rules of Evidence and ensure competency is demonstrated in a real or simulated workplace environment.
📖 Third-Party Evidence (if applicable): Workplace supervisors may provide verification of competency if assessments are conducted on-site.

Certificate & Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIRIS402E – Carry out the Risk Management Process, issued by Corrsafe RTO 40621. This qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). This unit does not in itself qualify participants to work as a registered WHS practitioner. It is a nationally recognised competency for risk management processes within relevant roles.

There is no mandatory renewal period for this unit. However, refresher training may be recommended by employers or industry bodies based on workplace risk assessments, company policies, and site-specific WHS requirements.

🎓 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you already have experience carrying out risk management processes in the Resources and Infrastructure Industry, you may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This process assesses your existing knowledge and skills against the requirements of the unit RIIRIS402E – Carry out the Risk Management Process.

To be considered for RPL, you’ll need to provide sufficient, valid, and current evidence, which may include:

📁 A portfolio of relevant workplace risk management experience

✅ Employer or supervisor third-party verification statements (we can provide a template)

🎓 Previous accredited Statements of Attainment or training transcripts (USI Transcript)

🛠️ Workplace risk management documentation you have developed or implemented (e.g., risk registers, hazard reports, control plans)

🗣️ Responses to oral questions or interviews with an assessor

⚠️ Important: While this unit is not a licensing unit, it must still meet training package and ASQA requirements. Regardless of any RPL granted for the training component, you must demonstrate competency in all elements and performance criteria through valid, current, and sufficient evidence.

If gaps are identified during the RPL process, we’ll offer gap training and assessment to support your path to full competency.
