Course Overview

The RIIHAN203E – Conduct Lifting Operations course is designed to provide participants with the essential skills and knowledge to safely conduct lifting operations in the resources and infrastructure industries. This course aligns with the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package and ensures compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, Australian Standards, and industry best practices.

Participants will gain competency in developing lifting plans, directing load movements, safely connecting loads, and confirming load stability. 

This unit does not itself result in a High Risk Work Licence but may be a prerequisite or recommended training for certain lifting roles regulated under WHSQ.

What You’ll Learn

✅ Understanding WHS legislative and regulatory requirements for lifting tasks.

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Minimum Age: Participants must be at least 16 years old at commencement of training.
🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID (e.g. Driver Licence or Passport)
🔹 USI Requirement: 
Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and steel cap boots. Corrsafe can supply PPE if required, please advise prior to course commencement.

📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.

Course Duration

A typical Conduct Lifting Course is delivered within one day.

This course involves approximately 10 hours of combined learning, including supervised training and assessment, online or pre-course study, and independent review. Duration may vary depending on your experience and chosen delivery method.

Total Volume of Learning:
🔹 Supervised training & assessment: 8 hours
🔹 Unsupervised study & pre-learning: 2 hours

Course Delivery Methods

📖 Face-to-Face Training: Conducted at our training centre in Bowen or on-site at your workplace (conditions apply).
📖 Blended Delivery: Theory components can be completed online; however, all practical assessments must be conducted in person at an approved training facility or workplace to meet competency requirements. Competency is only awarded after the practical assessment.
📖 Workplace-Based Assessment: Where applicable, workplace assessments must be conducted in a pre-approved workplace that meets all WHS and ASQA requirements. The site must provide access to compliant lifting equipment, a safe working environment, and be supervised by a qualified trainer/assessor. Workplaces used for assessment must replicate real work conditions and meet the requirements of the training package, ASQA Standards, and WHSQ regulations.

Assessment Methods

Assessment for this unit is conducted in accordance with the requirements of the training package, WHSQ guidelines, and ASQA Standards. Competency is determined through:

📖 Knowledge Assessment: Written and/or oral questions to assess underpinning knowledge of lifting operations, WHS requirements, and equipment use.
🛠️ Practical Assessment: Direct observation of the participant conducting lifting operations, including planning, directing, and safely moving loads in line with site procedures and legislative requirements. 
🏢 Workplace-Based Assessment (if applicable): Conducted at an approved workplace that meets WHS and equipment requirements, replicates real work conditions, and provides access to compliant lifting equipment.

All practical and workplace assessments must be conducted in an environment that complies with WHS legislation, risk controls, and industry standards. Hazards must be identified and controlled prior to assessment. Assessment must be conducted in conditions that reflect safe workplace practices, with access to compliant lifting equipment, communication devices, and realistic load types and weights. All assessment activities must be completed satisfactorily for the Statement of Attainment to be issued. 

Certificate & Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIHAN203E – Conduct Lifting Operations, issued by Corrsafe RTO 40621. This qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Industry best practices and Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations recommend periodic refresher training every five years to maintain compliance with workplace safety requirements. Refresher training ensures continued competency in lifting operations in accordance with AS 2550 and AS 1418 safety standards and WHSQ regulatory guidelines.

🎓 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you already have experience conducting lifting operations, you may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This process assesses your existing knowledge and skills against the requirements of the unit RIIHAN203E – Conduct Lifting Operations.

To be considered for RPL, you’ll need to provide sufficient, valid, and current evidence, which may include:

📁 A portfolio of relevant work experience
✅ Employer or supervisor third-party verification statements (we can provide a template)
🎓 Previous accredited Statements of Attainment or training transcripts (USI Transcript)
🛠️ A practical demonstration of your skills in a lifting operations context
🗣️ Responses to oral questions or interviews with an assessor

⚠️ Important: While this unit is not a High Risk Work Licence unit, it must still be assessed under workplace conditions that meet WHS legislative requirements, industry standards, and the RII Training Package.

If gaps are identified during the RPL process, we’ll offer gap training and assessment to support your path to full competency.
