Course Overview
The MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres course equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely test, monitor, and interpret atmospheric conditions in line with workplace procedures, WHS legislation, and Australian Standards.
Participants will learn to prepare for testing, correctly use portable gas detection equipment, monitor environmental conditions, and respond to unsafe readings.
This training supports compliance with:

🔹 Hazardous Chemicals Code of Practice 2021
🔹 Confined Spaces Code of Practice 2021
🔹 Relevant Australian Standards for atmospheric monitoring.
On successful completion, learners are assessed against the unit of competency:
MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres (Release 1) from the MSM Manufacturing Training Package.
⚠️ All training and assessment is delivered on behalf of Corrsafe Enterprises Pty Ltd (RTO 40621). Nationally Recognised Training is issued in accordance with the Standards for RTOs 2015/2025.

✅ Recording results and reporting unsafe or hazardous conditions.

Training uses industry-standard gas detectors and monitoring devices, ensuring participants gain real-world, hands-on experience.
Prerequisites & Entry Requirements
🔹 Minimum Age: Students must be a minimum of 13 years of age.
🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID (e.g. Driver Licence or Passport)
🔹 USI Requirement: Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes.
📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs. Reading 2–3 | Writing 2 | Oral Communication 2–3 | Numeracy 1–2 | Digital Literacy 1–2.

Course Duration & Volume of Learning
This course is typically delivered in 1 day.
Volume of Learning: ~20–30 hours, including:
🔹 6–8 hrs supervised instruction (theory & practical).
🔹 3–5 hrs pre-course/online learning (legislation, gas testing procedures).
🔹 2–3 hrs independent study (equipment familiarisation, safety procedures).
🔹 6–8 hrs supervised assessment (written & practical application).
This flexible structure caters for new entrants, refresher training, or RPL candidates.

Assessment Methods
Assessment follows the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence, ensuring fairness, flexibility, validity, and reliability.
Learners complete:
🔹 Theory Assessment: Multiple-choice and short-answer questions on gas properties, testing procedures, and WHS requirements.
🔹 Practical Demonstration: Hands-on gas testing using industry-standard detectors, interpreting results, and applying safe work procedures.
🔹 Workplace-Based Assessment (if applicable): Third-party verification from a competent supervisor or WHS officer.
Certificate & Outcome
Successful participants receive a Statement of Attainment – MSMWHS217 Gas Test Atmospheres, issued by Corrsafe RTO 40621.
⚠️ Refresher training is recommended every 2 years, maximum of 5 years, or more frequently if required by workplace/site policy.

This course is eligible for Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funding under the 2025–2026 Short Course Program. CSQ provides financial support to help upskill Queensland’s building and civil construction workforce.
CSQ Subsidy available: $200.00
Student Contribution: $50.00
(fully funded by Construction Skills Queensland + $50.00 non-funded administration fee)
Applicants must receive written confirmation of CSQ funding approval before commencing training, as retrospective claims are not permitted. Funding is subject to eligibility and availability.
