Course Overview

The HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies. This course aligns with HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation from the HLT Health Training Package and complies with the latest Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. Training and assessment are conducted in accordance with the requirements of the HLT Health Training Package and ASQA standards.

Participants will develop the skills and knowledge required to perform CPR safely and effectively in a range of emergency situations, ensuring compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, industry standards, and workplace requirements.

What You’ll Learn

The course covers the following key areas:

✅ Recognising and responding to emergency situations requiring CPR.
✅ Performing CPR on adults, children, and infants following ARC guidelines.
✅ Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) correctly.
✅ Understanding breathing and cardiac emergencies and appropriate responses.
✅ Complying with legal responsibilities, duty of care, and workplace first aid requirements.

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Minimum Age: Participants must be at least 14 years old.
🔹 Literacy & Numeracy: Basic English and numeracy skills are required to follow instructions and complete assessments.
🔹 Physical Requirements: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 ID Requirements: Valid photo ID (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, Medicare card, financial institution card).

🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID (e.g. Driver Licence or Passport)
🔹 USI RequirementParticipants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes.

📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.

 

Course Duration 

A typical CPR course is delivered in ½ day.
The total volume of learning includes supervised training, supervised assessment, and any required unsupervised/self-paced study.

📌 Note: Regardless of pathway, all practical training and assessment must be completed face-to-face under the supervision of a qualified assessor, using industry-standard equipment in real or simulated workplace conditions, in line with WHSQ and ARC Guidelines.

📖 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – Available for candidates with verified and relevant prior experience.

Note: Regardless of delivery mode, all practical components must be completed face-to-face under the supervision of a qualified assessor to meet licensing and competency requirements.

 

Assessment Methods

Assessment is conducted in line with the principles of competency-based training and includes:

📖 Knowledge Assessment – Written/multiple-choice questions to assess underpinning theory and legislative knowledge.

🛠 Practical Demonstration – Simulated rescue from a live low voltage panel, including hazard identification, PPE selection, isolation procedures, and casualty management.

📋 Scenario-Based Assessment – Application of rescue procedures within realistic workplace scenarios, following organisational and safety requirements.

All assessments must be completed in person under the observation of a qualified assessor, using industry-standard equipment, and in accordance with the unit’s assessment conditions and licensing requirements.

 

Certificate & Outcome

Upon successful completion of all training and assessment requirements, participants will be issued with a:

This Statement of Attainment is:
✔️ Nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)

📌 Currency Requirements:
To maintain compliance with WHSQ and ARC Guidelines, CPR training must be refreshed every 12 months.

Please Note – Physical Requirement:
To successfully complete this course, you must be physically capable of performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of compressions and ventilations) on an adult manikin placed on the floor.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – CPR

Participants with sufficient, current workplace evidence may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for:

🎓 HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

✔️ RPL requires submission of valid evidence demonstrating competency, such as workplace records, supervisor reports, or third-party verification.
✔️ All evidence is reviewed against the unit requirements under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
✔️ Where required, participants may need to complete gap assessment tasks (e.g., practical demonstration of CPR techniques on a manikin).
✔️ Final assessment must confirm the candidate’s ability to perform CPR in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.

📌 Currency Requirements:
Even if RPL is granted, CPR competency must be refreshed every 12 months to maintain compliance with WHSQ and ARC Guidelines.
