Industry standards recommend refresher training every five years to maintain competency, as per the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (QLD) and the Managing Risks of Plant in the Workplace Code of Practice 2021. Employers are responsible for ensuring workers maintain competency and meet WHS obligations.
Employers must assess operator competency on an ongoing basis and ensure refresher training is completed when necessary to comply with WHSQ regulations. Employers must provide refresher training when competency concerns arise, workplace incidents reveal a skills gap, or updates in equipment, procedures, or legislation impact safe operation. Employers who fail to provide necessary refresher training may be found non-compliant with WHSQ regulations, which could lead to penalties or enforcement actions.
