What You’ll Learn

The course covers the following key areas:

โœ… Performing CPR on adults, children, and infants, including AED (automated external defibrillator) use
โœ… Assessing and managing unconscious casualties (breathing and non-breathing)
โœ… Recognising and responding to medical conditions, such as heart attack, stroke, asthma, and anaphylaxis
โœ… Providing treatment for injuries, including bleeding, burns, fractures, and envenomation
โœ… Infection control procedures and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
โœ… Communicating and reporting first aid incidents in line with workplace procedures

โœ… Learners will demonstrate CPR on adult, child, and infant manikins for a minimum of 2 minutes each, respond to at least two simulated first aid incidents including asthma and anaphylaxis, and complete a workplace incident report.
โœ… You’ll also gain knowledge of legal considerations (duty of care, consent, privacy, WHS), the chain of survival, ARC guidelines, and strategies to manage stress for yourself and others after an incident.

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

๐Ÿ”น Minimum Age: Participants must be 13 years of age or older

๐Ÿ”น English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
๐Ÿ”น Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components. To successfully complete this course, you must be physically capable of performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles of compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, and

๐Ÿ”น Identification: Valid photo ID (e.g. Driver Licence or Passport)
๐Ÿ”น USI RequirementParticipants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info.
๐Ÿ”น PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes.

๐Ÿ“‹ Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.

Course Duration

A typical HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course is delivered as a one-day (8-hour) program, including both theory and practical assessment. Learners completing the CPR refresher (HLTAID009) component are required to update this annually in line with WHS legislation and ARC guidelines.

This course involves approximately 40–45 hours of combined learning, including supervised training and assessment, online or pre-course study, and independent review. Duration may vary depending on the learner’s prior experience, delivery mode, and workplace requirements.

Total Volume of Learning: 40–45 hours
๐Ÿ”น Supervised training & assessment: 16–28 hours (classroom, workplace, or simulated environment)
๐Ÿ”น Unsupervised study & pre-learning: 8–12 hours (self-directed study, online modules, reading, or reflection activities)

Course Delivery Methods

๐Ÿ“– Online Theory & Practical Training: Participants complete the theory component online before attending a scheduled face-to-face practical assessment
๐Ÿ“– Face-to-Face Training: Conducted at our training centre or on-site at your workplace
๐Ÿ“– Workplace Training: Customised on-site delivery to meet specific industry requirements
Note: The practical assessment must be completed in person to meet ASQA and WHSQ compliance requirements.

Assessment Methods

Assessment for HLTAID011 combines theory and practical tasks to ensure learners demonstrate both knowledge and skills.

Knowledge – Written/online questions covering first aid procedures, legal requirements, and emergency response.
Practical – Demonstrations including CPR (adult/child/infant), AED use, managing casualties, treating common injuries/illnesses, infection control, and reporting.
Conditions – Practical tasks are completed in a simulated or workplace environment with access to required equipment and PPE.
Assessors – Must hold TAE40122 (or equivalent) and current vocational competency in first aid.

All assessments are conducted in a simulated environment that reflects real workplace conditions and include the use of adult, child, and infant resuscitation manikins, AED trainer, placebo medications, dressings, bandages, and PPE as specified in the HLTAID011 assessment conditions.

Certificate & Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for:

๐Ÿ† HLTAID011 Provide First Aid – valid for 3 years
๐Ÿ† HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – must be renewed annually

Statements of Attainment are issued in accordance with the Standards for RTOs 2015 and ASQA requirements.
This qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and aligns with industry best practices.
Industry Standards: It is recommended that first aid training is refreshed every three years, and CPR training is updated annually in accordance with WHS legislation and ARC guidelines.

Eligibility criteria:
