RIIWHS202E – Enter & Work in Confined Spaces

MSMWHS216 – Gas Test Atmospheres

Course Overview

This combined training program equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely test and monitor workplace atmospheres and to enter, work in, and exit confined spaces in accordance with workplace procedures, Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation, relevant Codes of Practice, and applicable Australian Standards.

🔷 Participants will learn to prepare for atmospheric testing, correctly use portable gas detection equipment, interpret gas readings, and respond to unsafe atmospheric conditions in line with site requirements.

🔷 Participants will also develop the capability to identify confined space hazards, implement effective risk controls, use appropriate safety and rescue equipment, and follow entry, work and exit procedures, including emergency response requirements.

🔷 The training reflects current industry practice and supports safe work in high-risk environments where atmospheric testing and confined space entry are required.

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Minimum Age: Students must be a minimum of 13 years of age.
🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID, please refer to page 9 of Evidence of Identity document.
🔹 USI Requirement: Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info. Corrsafe verifies each USI with the Registrar prior to its use, in accordance with the Student Identifiers Act.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes.

📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs. Foundation skills for this course align with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF): Reading Level 2–3, Writing Level 2, Oral Communication Level 2–3, Numeracy Level 1–2, and Digital Literacy Level 1–2. These skills are required to interpret confined space permits and signage, complete risk assessments and reports, communicate with team members, and interpret atmospheric testing results.

Course Duration & Volume of Learning

This combined Gas Testing and Confined Spaces course is typically delivered within 1 day, depending on learner experience, workplace context, and delivery model.

The indicative volume of learning across the two units is approximately 30–40 hours, which includes a combination of supervised training, assessment, and independent learning activities.

🔹 10–14 hours of supervised theory and practical instruction, including confined space entry procedures, atmospheric testing, hazard identification, risk controls, and use of safety equipment.

🔹 6–8 hours of supervised assessment, including written knowledge assessment and practical demonstration of skills in simulated confined space and gas testing scenarios.

🔹 3–5 hours of pre-course reading or online learning, such as WHS legislation, Codes of Practice, confined space requirements, and gas testing procedures.

🔹 2–3 hours of independent study, including reviewing permit systems, signage, emergency procedures, equipment familiarisation, and workplace safety documentation.

This structure allows flexibility for experienced workers undertaking refresher training or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), as well as for new entrants who require structured delivery, contextualised learning, and hands-on practice to achieve competency.

Delivery Options

🏫 Face-to-Face – Theory and practical delivered at Corrsafe’s facility or onsite at your workplace.
Learners who complete the pre-learning attend a shorter, practical-focused session using gas detectors and atmospheric monitoring equipment. All others complete full theory and practical on site.

🏗️ Workplace Delivery – On-site training contextualised to your plant, equipment, atmospheric hazards, and site procedures.

🌐 Online + Practical – Complete the online theory (4–8 hrs), then attend the practical session to demonstrate gas testing, equipment checks, bump testing, calibration confirmation, and interpreting atmospheric readings.
A short Challenge Test is completed at the start of the practical to verify readiness. Learners who don’t meet the requirement are rescheduled and supported to reattempt. The Challenge Test is diagnostic only and not part of formal assessment.

🔄 Refresher – Online theory only (4–8 hrs).
Evidence of recent, relevant gas testing competency must be provided prior to enrolment (e.g., permits, gas test records, employer verification, photos/videos of equipment use). This ensures refresher training is valid and meets industry expectations.

📜 RPL – Provide evidence of prior competency in gas testing; gap training available where evidence is insufficient.

Assessment Methods

Assessment follows the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence, ensuring fairness, flexibility, validity, and reliability.

Learners complete:

🔹 Theory Assessment: Multiple-choice and short-answer questions on gas properties, testing procedures, and WHS requirements.

🔹 Practical Demonstration: Hands-on gas testing using industry-standard detectors, interpreting results, and applying safe work procedures.

Certificate & Outcome

Successful participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following nationally recognised units of competency, issued by Corrsafe Enterprises Pty Ltd (RTO 40621):

🔹 MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres
🔹 RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces

These units are nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and are issued in accordance with the VET Quality Framework and the Credential Policy.

⚠️ Refresher training is recommended every 2 years, and no longer than 5 years, or more frequently where required by workplace procedures, site-specific rules, or organisational risk management practices.

⚠️ Industry best practice and regulatory guidance, including the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld) and the Confined Spaces Code of Practice 2021 (Qld), support regular refresher training to ensure ongoing competency.

⚠️ Individual workplaces, principal contractors, or site controllers may mandate more frequent refresher training based on risk, task complexity, or permit-to-work requirements.
