Course Overview

The RIIMPO320F Conduct Civil Construction Excavator Operations unit provides participants with the practical skills and knowledge required to safely operate an excavator in civil construction, earthmoving, mining, quarrying, and general infrastructure environments.
Learners will develop competence in machine setup, operation, lifting and moving materials, trenching, excavation, backfilling, and shutdown procedures in line with workplace procedures, manufacturer specifications, and WHS regulatory requirements.

Training reflects current industry expectations and focuses on safe operating techniques, hazard management, and site communication protocols to ensure learners can work effectively and safely in real job environments.

Training and assessment are conducted in compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld), relevant Codes of Practice, and all applicable Commonwealth, State and Territory legislation.

What You’ll Learn

✅ Conduct pre-starts, routine inspections, and equipment checks
✅ Identify hazards and implement control measures
✅ Safely operate an excavator for various tasks including: trenching, battering & benching, loading trucks, lifting and moving materials, stockpiling and earthshaping
✅ Select, fit, and use appropriate attachments
✅ Use machine controls smoothly and safely
✅ Follow site communication methods, including hand signals and two-way radios
✅ Shut down and secure equipment according to site and manufacturer requirements

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Minimum Age:  Participant must be at least 16 years of age.

🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID, please refer to page 9 of Evidence of Identity document.
🔹 USI Requirement: Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info. Corrsafe verifies each USI with the Registrar prior to use, in accordance with the Student Identifiers Act.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes. Training will be conducted using an industry-standard telescopic materials handler, relevant attachments, and compliant PPE. Corrsafe can supply PPE (hi-vis and steel-cap boots) if required.

📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.

Course Duration & Volume of Learning

A typical excavator course is delivered over 1–2 days, depending on experience.

Approximate Volume of Learning:

Supervised Training & Assessment: 8–12 hours

Unsupervised / Pre-course Study: 2–4 hours

Total Volume of Learning: 10–16 hours

Duration varies depending on learner experience, workplace requirements, and delivery pathway.

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes:

📖 Knowledge Assessment
Multiple-choice and short-answer questions covering WHS, machine operation, and hazard control.

🛠 Practical Demonstration
Conducting equipment inspections and pre-starts
Operating the excavator to perform tasks such as trenching, loading, backfilling, stockpiling, and manoeuvring
Using attachments safely
Following traffic rules, exclusion zones, and communication protocols

📄 Workplace Documentation
Completing risk assessments, SWMS, or operational logs (where required)

All assessment activities meet ASQA’s Rules of Evidence and the unit’s performance evidence, knowledge evidence, and assessment conditions.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a:
