Course Overview
The RIIMPO319E Conduct Backhoe/Loader Operations course provides learners with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a backhoe/loader in civil construction, mining, earthmoving, agriculture, and general infrastructure projects.
Participants will learn to inspect equipment, conduct pre-operational checks, operate the machine safely, load and transport materials, apply hazard controls, and shut down and secure equipment in line with workplace procedures, manufacturer specifications, and WHS obligations.
This unit forms part of the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package and is nationally recognised. Training focuses on practical, job-ready skills that align with industry expectations and site competency verification requirements (VOC), ensuring learners operate plant safely and effectively in real work environments.

Training and assessment are conducted in compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld), relevant Codes of Practice, and all applicable Commonwealth, State and Territory legislation.
The Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) logo is used in accordance with the NRT Logo Conditions of Use Policy.

What You’ll Learn
✅ Conduct routine inspections and pre-start checks
✅ Identify hazards and apply risk controls when operating plant
✅ Operate a backhoe/loader to load, lift, place, and transport materials
✅ Select, fit, and use attachments in line with manufacturer guidelines
✅ Engage safety features, use controls correctly, and follow operator manuals
✅ Complete stockpiles, trenching, backfilling, and general earthworks tasks
✅ Shut down equipment safely and secure the machine after use
✅ Apply site communication protocols, signage, and traffic management rules
Prerequisites & Entry Requirements
🔹 Minimum Age: Participant must be at least 16 years of age.
🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID, please refer to page 9 of Evidence of Identity document.
🔹 USI Requirement: Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info. Corrsafe verifies each USI with the Registrar prior to use, in accordance with the Student Identifiers Act.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes. Training will be conducted using an industry-standard telescopic materials handler, relevant attachments, and compliant PPE. Corrsafe can supply PPE (hi-vis and steel-cap boots) if required.
📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.
Course Duration & Volume of Learning
A typical backhoe course is delivered within 1 day.
A typical backhoe/loader course is delivered in 1 full day for learners with some experience.
Beginner operators or those requiring additional practice may require extended training or multiple sessions, depending on competency and confidence.
Volume of learning typically includes:
Supervised Training & Assessment: 6–8 hours
Unsupervised / Pre-course Study: 2–4 hours
Total Volume of Learning: 8–12 hours
Duration may vary depending on learner experience, workplace requirements, and delivery method.

Assessment Methods
Assessment includes:
📖 Knowledge Assessment
Multiple-choice and short-answer theory questions
Demonstrates understanding of WHS, machine operation, hazard controls
🛠 Practical Demonstration
Conduct pre-starts, equipment inspections, and machine setup
Operate a backhoe/loader to perform tasks such as: lifting and loading materials, trenching and backfilling, forming stockpiles, controlled manoeuvring in confined areas
Shut down and secure equipment following site procedures
📄 Workplace Documentation
Completing operational logs, risk assessments, or SWMS (where required)
All assessments align to the unit’s elements, performance criteria, knowledge evidence, and performance evidence.
Certificate & Outcome
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a:

Corrsafe Enterprises Pty Ltd does not accept prepaid fees exceeding $1500 per learner prior to delivery. All fee management complies with Clause 18 of the Compliance Standards for RTOs 2025.

🎓 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you already have experience testing and monitoring workplace atmospheres, you may be eligible for RPL. Your skills will be assessed against MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres.
Evidence may include:

🎓 Statements of Attainment or transcripts
🛠️ Practical demonstration of gas testing skills
🗣️ Oral questions or interview with an assessor
⚠️ Many sites require a current Statement of Attainment before you can perform gas testing. If gaps are found, gap training and assessment will be provided.
