Course Overview

The RIIMPO301E – Conduct Hydraulic Excavator Operation unit provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a hydraulic excavator in civil construction, mining, infrastructure, and earthmoving environments.

Training focuses on safe machine operation, pre-start inspections, hazard identification, excavation techniques, trenching, lifting, loading, shutdown procedures, and routine maintenance. The course is delivered in line with WHS legislation, manufacturer specifications, site procedures, and industry best practice to ensure competent and safe operation.

Training and assessment are conducted in compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld), relevant Codes of Practice, and all applicable Commonwealth, State and Territory legislation.

The Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) logo is used in accordance with the NRT Logo Conditions of Use Policy.

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Minimum Age:  Participant must be at least 16 years of age.

🔹 English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
🔹 Identification: Valid photo ID, please refer to page 9 of Evidence of Identity document.
🔹 USI Requirement: Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info. Corrsafe verifies each USI with the Registrar prior to use, in accordance with the Student Identifiers Act.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes. Training will be conducted using an industry-standard telescopic materials handler, relevant attachments, and compliant PPE. Corrsafe can supply PPE (hi-vis and steel-cap boots) if required.

📋 Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.

Course Duration & Volume of Learning

A typical hydraulic excavator course is delivered over:

🔹 1–2 days for new or inexperienced learners

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes:

📖 Knowledge assessment (written and/or online)
🛠 Practical demonstration of excavator operation, including:

Pre-start inspections
Safe manoeuvring and excavation tasks
Lifting, loading, and placement of materials
Hazard identification and risk controls

📄 Completion of relevant workplace documentation (e.g. SWMS or risk assessments where applicable)

All assessment tasks align with the unit requirements, Principles of Assessment, and Rules of Evidence.

Certificate & Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a:
