Course Overview
This course aligns with RIIHAN305D – Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane from the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. Participants will develop the skills and knowledge required to safely operate gantry or overhead cranes in accordance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, Australian Standards, and industry best practices.
This course does not cover operations requiring a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). Where HRWL is required for the crane type or control system used, additional licensing must be obtained separately.
This course also supports the development of foundation skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork essential for safe crane operations.
This unit does not meet the requirements for a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) as prescribed under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld). Where HRWL is required, separate licensing must be obtained through WHSQ.

โ Performing pre-start, start-up, park-up, and shutdown procedures.
โ Operating crane controls to safely lift, move, and position loads.
โ Conducting routine maintenance, including inspections and lubrication.
โ Interpreting and applying workplace documentation and load charts.
โ Working effectively with others to ensure safe lifting operations.
Prerequisites & Entry Requirements
๐น Minimum Age: Participants must be atleast 18 years of age.
๐น English Language: Participants must complete a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to ensure they can meet course requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
๐น Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of fitness is required for the practical components.
๐น Identification: Valid photo ID (e.g. Driver Licence or Passport)
๐น USI Requirement: Participants must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol. Visit www.usi.gov.au for more info.
๐น PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including high-visibility shirt or vest, and closed in shoes.
๐ Note: All participants complete a brief Learner Suitability Self-Assessment at the start of the course to confirm their readiness and identify any support needs.
Course Duration
Face-to-face component is delivered in 1 day, supported by pre-course and post-course learning to meet the total VoLThis course involves approximately 40–45 hours of total learning, consistent with the TAS requirements. The balance of supervised training, assessment, and unsupervised study may vary depending on learner experience and delivery method.

Course Delivery Methods
This course is delivered via blended or face-to-face training, depending on learner needs.
๐น Blended Delivery includes self-paced pre-learning (written or elearning), followed by a face-to-face practical session and assessment.
๐น Face-to-Face Delivery may run over 1 or 2 days depending on whether pre-learning is completed beforehand.
๐ All learners, regardless of delivery mode, must complete a short Challenge Test at the start of the face-to-face session to confirm readiness and verify knowledge.
Assessment Methods
You will be assessed against the national competency requirements through:
๐๏ธ Knowledge Assessment – written and/or oral questions to confirm understanding of legislation, WHS, safe work procedures, and crane operation requirements.
โ๏ธ Practical Assessment – demonstration of safe gantry/overhead crane operations, including:
๐น Pre-operational checks and equipment inspections
๐น Hazard identification and risk control measures
๐น Correct selection and use of lifting gear
๐น Safe lifting, moving, and placing of loads
๐น Communication using standard signals
๐น Shutdown and secure procedures
๐ Workplace/Scenario Activities – completion of case studies, workplace tasks, or simulated scenarios that reflect real industry conditions.

All assessments are conducted in accordance with the Principles of Assessment (validity, reliability, flexibility, fairness) and Rules of Evidence (validity, sufficiency, authenticity, currency) as required under the Standards for RTOs 2025.
Certificate & Outcome
Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIHAN305D Operate a gantry or overhead crane issued by Corrsafe RTO 40621, a registered training organisation recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
Industry best practices recommend refresher training every five years. While not required by the unit of competency, Corrsafe encourages periodic retraining to ensure ongoing compliance and safety. Industry best practice recommends refresher training every 5 years to maintain competence.
