Course Overview

This course aligns with RIIHAN305D – Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane from the RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. Participants will develop the skills and knowledge required to safely operate gantry or overhead cranes in accordance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, Australian Standards, and industry best practices.
This course does not cover operations requiring a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). Where HRWL is required for the crane type or control system used, additional licensing must be obtained separately.
This course also supports the development of foundation skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork essential for safe crane operations.

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Age Requirement: Participants must be at least 18 years of age.
🔹 Language, Literacy, and Numeracy: Basic English and numeracy skills required to read instructions, complete assessments, and understand workplace safety signs.
🔹 Photo ID:
100 points of valid ID (e.g., driver's licence, passport, Medicare card, bank card).
🔹 Physical Fitness: A reasonable level of physical fitness is required to safely complete practical tasks.
🔹 PPE: Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (e.g., steel-capped boots, gloves, helmet, and high-vis clothing) may be required.
🔹 All participants must supply a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) before a Statement of Attainment can be issued.

Course Duration

📆 Full Course: Typically one day (8 hours), including theory and practical components.
📆 Refresher Course: Approximately 4–6 hours, depending on prior experience.
📆 RPL: Recognition of Prior Learning is available for experienced operators – assessment time varies based on evidence supplied.

📖 Blended Delivery: Complete theory online; practical must be conducted at an approved training facility or workplace.

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes:
📖 Theory Assessment: Multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
📖 Practical Demonstration: Hands-on use of gantry or overhead crane systems.
📖 Workplace-based Assessment: May be conducted onsite where applicable and safe.

Certificate & Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for:
RIIHAN305D – Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane
This qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
Industry best practices recommend refresher training every five years. While not required by the unit of competency, Corrsafe encourages periodic retraining to ensure ongoing compliance and safety.
