Course Overview

The TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor course provides participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to safely enter and access a rail corridor.

This nationally recognised unit forms part of the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package and applies to people who are required to access the rail corridor as part of their work.

Participants will learn how to:

🔹Obtain appropriate authority before entering the rail corridor
🔹Identify rail corridor hazards, danger zones and safe places
🔹Apply appropriate risk controls and safety precautions
🔹Wear PPE in accordance with Rail Infrastructure Manager requirements
🔹Maintain awareness of rail movements and changing conditions
🔹Follow rail safety communication requirements and procedures
🔹Respond appropriately to unsafe situations and emergencies.

The training incorporates the relevant Rail Infrastructure Manager (RIM) rules, procedures and protocols for safely accessing the rail corridor. Participants who achieve competency must also comply with applicable state or territory rail safety requirements, codes of practice, rules and guidelines relevant to the rail network in which they work.

There are no prerequisite units for TLIF0020 and no licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply specifically to the unit at the time of publication. However, individual Rail Infrastructure Managers and rail networks may have additional entry, competency or safety requirements.

Training and assessment are conducted in accordance with the requirements of TLIF0020, applicable rail safety requirements, Rail Infrastructure Manager procedures, and relevant Commonwealth, State and Territory legislation.

The Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) logo is used in accordance with the NRT Logo Conditions of Use Policy.

✔️ Need to understand how to respond appropriately to unsafe situations and emergencies within the rail corridor.

What You’ll Learn

The course covers the following key areas:

✅ Understanding rail corridors, danger zones and safe places.
✅ Obtaining the appropriate authority to enter the rail corridor from the Protection Officer/Possession Protection Officer.
✅ Identifying rail corridor hazards, assessing risks and applying appropriate control measures.
✅ Correct selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in accordance with Rail Infrastructure Manager requirements.
✅ Recognising approaching trains, minimum sighting distances, warnings and changing conditions within the rail environment.
✅ Maintaining situational awareness and effective communication with other personnel while accessing the rail corridor.
✅ Understanding and following relevant Rail Infrastructure Manager rules, procedures, protocols and entry requirements.
✅ Identifying unsafe situations and emergencies and taking the appropriate action, including emergency or danger response signals.

Prerequisites & Entry Requirements

🔹 Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisite units required for TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor.
🔹 English Language & LLN: Participants must have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills to understand safety information, follow workplace procedures and successfully complete the training and assessment requirements. We offer LLN assistance, learning support, and referrals to other services. Speak with our team before enrolment if you require additional assistance.
🔹 Physical Requirements: Participants must be physically capable of safely completing the practical components of the course, including accessing a simulated or operational rail corridor environment and identifying danger zones and safe places.
🔹 Identification: Participants must provide suitable identification to meet Corrsafe’s enrolment and verification requirements.
🔹 USI Requirement: Participants undertaking nationally recognised training must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) unless an exemption applies. Corrsafe verifies each USI with the Registrar prior to its use.
🔹 PPE: Participants must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suitable for the practical training environment. PPE must conform to applicable Rail Infrastructure Manager (RIM) requirements.

📋 All students complete a Learner Suitability Self-Assessment as part of the enrolment/training process.

⚠️ Important: Individual rail networks and Rail Infrastructure Managers may have additional entry requirements, limitations, PPE requirements or site-specific rules. Participants should confirm any network-specific requirements relevant to where they intend to work.

Course Duration

TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor has 10 nationally agreed nominal training hours. Course duration may vary depending on the delivery pathway, participant experience and individual learning needs.

💻 Online / Blended Delivery: Participants may complete the theory component online at their own pace, followed by the required practical training and assessment with Corrsafe.

📌 Note: Practical assessment must meet the assessment conditions of TLIF0020. Assessment must occur in an appropriate workplace operational situation or, where this is not appropriate, in a simulated workplace operational situation that replicates a rail corridor.

Participants must demonstrate the practical skills required by the unit, including identifying danger zones and safe places, identifying and controlling hazards, following workplace procedures, communicating effectively and using PPE that conforms to Rail Infrastructure Manager requirements.

⏱️ Nominal Hours: The nationally agreed nominal hours for TLIF0020 are 10 hours. Actual training duration may vary depending on the participant’s existing skills, knowledge, experience, learning needs and chosen delivery pathway.

Course Delivery Methods

📖 Face-to-Face Training: Complete the theory, practical training and assessment directly with a qualified Corrsafe trainer and assessor.

💻 Online / Blended Training: Complete the theory component online at your own pace, followed by practical training and assessment with a qualified Corrsafe assessor.

🦺 Practical Assessment: Participants must demonstrate the practical skills required by TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor, including identifying danger zones and safe places, identifying and controlling hazards, following workplace procedures, communicating effectively and correctly using required PPE.

⚠️ Practical competency cannot be assessed entirely online. Assessment must occur in an appropriate workplace operational situation or a simulated workplace operational situation that replicates a rail corridor.

Training and assessment incorporate applicable Rail Infrastructure Manager (RIM) rules, procedures, protocols, terminology and safety requirements relevant to safely accessing the rail corridor.

Assessment Methods

Assessment includes:

📖 Knowledge Assessment: Assessment of the participant’s understanding of rail corridor safety, danger zones, Rail Infrastructure Manager requirements, rail terminology, electrical infrastructure hazards, safety procedures and emergency requirements.

🛠️ Practical Demonstration: Participants must demonstrate the practical skills required to safely access the rail corridor, including identifying danger zones and safe places, identifying and controlling hazards, following workplace procedures, communicating effectively and correctly using required PPE.

🚨 Emergency Response: Participants must demonstrate an understanding of appropriate actions when unsafe situations or emergencies occur within the rail corridor.

Assessment must be conducted in an appropriate workplace operational situation or, where this is not appropriate, a simulated workplace environment that replicates a rail corridor.

All assessment is conducted by appropriately qualified assessors and must satisfy the Principles of Assessment, Rules of Evidence and applicable Standards for Registered Training Organisations.

Certificate & Outcome

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor, issued by Corrsafe Enterprises Pty Ltd (RTO 40621).

Successful participants will have demonstrated the skills and knowledge required to safely access a rail corridor, including accessing the danger zone, identifying hazards and safe places, following rail safety procedures, using appropriate PPE, and responding appropriately to emergencies.

⚠️ Important: Completion of TLIF0020 does not automatically provide unrestricted access to all rail networks. Participants must also meet any applicable state or territory rail safety requirements and the specific Rail Infrastructure Manager (RIM) rules, procedures, protocols and entry requirements for the rail network in which they intend to work.

TLIF0020 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor is eligible for Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funding, providing financial assistance to eligible participants working within Queensland’s building and civil construction industry.

CSQ Subsidy available: $550.00
Student Contribution: $450.00

CSQ funding can significantly reduce the cost of completing this nationally recognised rail safety training for eligible participants.

Applicants must receive confirmation of CSQ funding eligibility and approval before commencing training, as retrospective claims are not permitted. Funding is subject to participant eligibility, program requirements and available funding.
