QUALITATIVE VS QUANTITATIVE

FIT TESTING METHOD

What’s the difference? What’s better? What will protect my employees better? What will protect myself better?

Quantitative Fit Testing – Portacount Method

Corrsafe uses the PortaCount® CNC (Condensation Nuclei Counter) machine to conduct Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT). This method is considered the most precise and objective way to determine whether a tight-fitting respirator forms an effective seal to the wearer’s face.

Quantitative Fit Testing is mandatory before a worker wears a respirator on the job, and must be repeated:

🔹 At least once every 12 months

🔹 When using a new brand or model of respirator

🔹 After significant facial changes (such as weight fluctuation, dental work, surgery, or facial scarring)

🔹 If the respirator has not been used for an extended period

How the Test Works

The respirator is fitted with a test adapter and connected to the PortaCount device via a sampling tube.

The machine measures microscopic airborne particles outside and inside the mask while the wearer performs exercises such as:

🔹 Normal breathing

🔹 Deep breathing

🔹 Head side-to-side

🔹 Head up and down

🔹 Talking

🔹 Bending over

A Fit Factor is calculated: a numeric value representing the level of protection. The higher the number, the better the fit.

What Can Be Tested?

The PortaCount method is suitable for testing:

🔹 Disposable respirators (P2, N95)

🔹 Half-face reusable respirators

🔹 Full-face respirators (including SCBA)

Why Use the PortaCount Method?

🔹 Delivers real-time, objective results

🔹 Does not rely on the wearer’s sense of taste or smell

🔹 Suitable for all types of tight-fitting respirators

Complies with:

🔹 AS/NZS 1715:2009

🔹 OSHA 1910.134 Quantitative Fit Test Protocols

🔹 Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) expectations

After the Test

🔹 The entire test process takes around 15 to 20 minutes

🔹 A Fit Test Certificate is issued immediately

🔹 Results are documented to support your WHS compliance and site audit requirements

Where Testing Can Be Done

🔹 At our Bowen facility (65 Bootooloo Road)

🔹 On-site at your workplace

Facial Hair Guideline

To pass a respirator fit test, the wearer must be clean shaven where the mask seals to the face. Facial hair, including stubble, beards, and sideburns, breaks the seal and allows contaminants to leak in.

Fit testing will be cancelled if facial hair is present in the sealing area.

The only facial hair allowed is a moustache that does not cross into the sealing area.

Employers are responsible for making sure workers are clean shaven before attending testing. Corrsafe staff cannot enforce shaving on site.
